Jesus wants our churches to be really, really good-looking.

Waiting for election things to settle a bit before blogging on that... that... circus.

In the meantime, here's a parody of the type of church lots of Christians hope for as we move more fully into the 21st Century. I think these fantasies are very ripe for it, and these dreams should be lampooned in order to expose and save us from them.

Enjoy.

(Er, when i say 'enjoy', what i mean is 'try not to vomit all over your keyboard')

Brilliant!

I laughed, and I wholeheartedly agreed... and yet deep deep down there remains something annoyingly attractive about it. *sigh*

Scary and accurate.

It is a constant source of amazement to me how God still wins people to Him despite all the crap we put in the way in the idea that it actually helps.

Reminds me of this video I once saw,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGEmlPjgjVI

The scary thing is I have been to churches in the UK exactly these. It's un-nerving.

Ian, I think it IS an attractive thing 'wouldn't it be cool if church was like a TV show' - crisp, clear lines, bright colours, everything in its right place, beautiful sounds and beautiful people, even a tech room that's sexy.

I wonder if it's related to two things: 1 - Our desire for clarity and the removal of ambiguity, so that we might clearly KNOW and communitcate that which is 'right' and that which is 'safe'.
And 2 - Our celebrity obsessed, media ravaged society; the way we allow tv to govern our values. So something only matters if it's on TV, or if it's comparable to TV. We can remain attracted to it because there is comfort to be found in knowing, safety and esteem. The problem for me is these things, at very least, have big questions asked of them by the cross. *sigh* indeed!

Tim, such is the grace of God! That said, what i find scary in this is the way it lends itself to people to latch on to as a substitute for God / truth / the grace we've identified. I remember very clearly a time where i was comitted to Christianity rather than to Jesus. Um, I was working as an evangelist at the time - terrfying!

Phoce, Hello! Checked out the video, i suppose, like the two other's comments, this is about the way we substitute a difficult thing for an easier thing ie. others for me, risk for safety, and control for mercy.

Andy, you've convinced me. Who needs a listening meeting when you've got this as a template? When do we start?

I need to learn the guitar so I can be the guy at the start. Do you want to be the guy in glasses (with your Believe tattoo showing you have a 'past')? Noticable that there were no women leaders in the video so we have to get rid of Kez and Mary.
